VoIP - Voice Over IP

What is VoIP?

VoIP is an acronym which stands for "Voice over Internet Protocol". Some of you may be familiar with the "Public Switched Telephone System” (PSTN), which allows us to contact people around the world by dialling a sequence of numbers. VoIP offers an alternative, which works by routing digitised voice signals over IP networks, such as company Intranets or in some cases the public internet.

Established Technology

VoIP isn't a particularly new technology; there are papers and patents about the subject dating back several decades, and there was some early VOIP software available as early as 1991.

The basic principle is pretty simple; it is essentially the same technology that is used to stream music across the Internet. Voice sounds are picked up by a microphone and digitised by a sound card. Once digitised, the data packets can be sent anywhere around the world.

VoIP Communications at Cavendish

VoIP is at the heart of many communications these days and all of the telephone systems that we offer at Cavendish either work solely using IP technology or at least have IP as one of the options.

The office system at Cavendish is a Mitel IP communications solution, which offers many advantages over a traditional telephone system. These include:

  • Simple telephone administration
  • Integrated mobile communications

  • Disaster recover and business continuity
  • Voicemail to email for increased contactability
