SIP (or Session Initiated Protocol) trunking uses the internet to connect devices such as computers, telephones, private branch exchanges (PBX's), video conferencing units and servers to each other and to the public networks.

IP trunking can be used to provide virtual phone lines between your office PBX and the public telephone network. The big benefit is that as well as being cheaper than ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) you can choose exactly how many virtual phone lines you need, rather than be forced to choose fixed blocks of lines whether you need them all or not.

The other big benefits are that provided you have sufficient bandwidth, you don't have to pay for any additional hardware to add more channels, unlike the ISDN solution and by using SIP trunks, you have in-built disaster recovery with the ability to switch circuits, should a particular circuit go down.
